Uses for Epsom Salts

The Benefits of Epsom Salt
Epsom salts, named after a saline spring in Surrey, England, is not actually salt but a naturally occurring mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate. For centuries, people have used Epsom salts for various health and beauty purposes.

Sore Muscles and Body Aches
One of the most popular uses of Epsom salts is for relieving sore muscles and body aches. Adding Epsom salts to your warm bath may help reduce inflammation and ease pain. The magnesium in Epsom salts can be absorbed through your skin, potentially helping to relax muscles and reduce swelling. Add 1-2 cups of Epsom salts to your bath and soak for about 15 minutes to experience its soothing effects.

Improve Sleep
If you struggle with sleep, an Epsom salts bath before bedtime might help. The magnesium in Epsom salts is known to promote relaxation and calm the nervous system. It may also help regulate melatonin, the hormone that controls your sleep-wake cycles. Try taking a warm Epsom salts bath about an hour before bedtime. The combination of warm water and Epsom salts can help prepare your body for a restful night's sleep.

Psoriasis Symptoms
For those with psoriasis, Epsom salts baths may provide some relief. The magnesium in Epsom salts can help reduce inflammation and remove scales associated with psoriasis. Add about 2 cups of Epsom salts to a warm bath and soak for about 15 minutes. After your bath, gently pat your skin dry and apply a moisturizer to lock in hydration.

Constipation
Epsom salts can be used as a natural laxative to relieve occasional constipation. When taken orally, Epsom salts draws water into the colon, which can promote bowel movements. Always follow package instructions or your doctor's advice and use only Epsom salts labeled for internal use.

Stress and Anxiety
Epsom salts baths may help reduce stress and anxiety. The magnesium in Epsom salts can promote the production of serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical in the brain. It may also lower the stress hormone cortisol. Create a calming environment with soft lighting and soothing music to enhance the stress-reducing effects of your bath.

Headaches and Migraines
Some people find relief from headaches and migraine by soaking in an Epsom salts bath. The magnesium in Epsom salts may help relax blood vessels, potentially easing tension headaches. If you're prone to headaches, try taking an Epsom salts bath at the first sign of discomfort. Remember to stay hydrated.

Exfoliating and Softening Skin
Epsom salts can be a great natural exfoliant for your skin. Its coarse texture helps remove dead skin cells, leaving your skin softer and smoother. To make an Epsom salts scrub, mix equal parts Epsom salts and coconut oil. Gently massage the mixture onto damp skin in circular motions, then rinse off. This can be particularly beneficial for rough areas like elbows, knees, and feet.

Swelling and Inflammation
Epsom salts baths may help reduce swelling and inflammation, making them potentially beneficial for conditions like arthritis or injuries. The magnesium in Epsom salts can be absorbed through the skin, which may help decrease inflammation in the body. If you're dealing with swollen joints or muscles, try soaking the affected area in warm water with dissolved Epsom salts for about 15 minutes.
