Snoring may seem like it's no big deal, but it can be a sign of something more serious. You may not even realize it's happening. While snoring can sometimes be harmless, it can be a sign of a bigger health problem. Getting regular and restorative sleep is important for well-being, stress management, and resilience. Inadequate or poor sleep can lead to many health concerns. Snoring can signal a sign of a serious condition, such as obstructive sleep apnea, a common condition that is linked to cardiac and other chronic health conditions if left untreated. Obstructive sleep apnea happens when your airway becomes partially or completely blocked while you sleep. This interrupts breathing and can prevent your body from getting enough oxygen.
Take notice if you are waking up with headaches, feeling tired in the morning and drowsy during the day, or if your snoring comes with weight gain, changes in your memory, or less ability to concentrate. You may be able to reduce your snoring simply by making lifestyle changes, like losing excess weight or sleeping on your side. Other methods may include oral appliances, positive airway pressure devices, known as CPAP, or surgery. If you have a bed partner, ask them if they hear you snoring at night. And consult your doctor if you have any concerns.
